Why any occult phenomenon will be chalked up to mental illness

Standard

This is generally speaking the case, if something happens to someone and paranormality or the occult was involved somehow, the individual will be, on paper, labeled as mentally ill or psychologically unwell or dysfunctional etc. Why is this the case?

The plain and simple answer is that the average person cannot see what is “going on”. Most people have heard stories about someone for example having done something the equivalent of committed suicide or similar and then having written on a letter “The demons took me” and it just goes on like that. More often than not, these people are actually dealing with spiritual forces that torment them and outright drive them to do or commit these atrocities. From the average person’s perspective, that has little to no way of establishing spiritual foul play and related it’ll look like it’s just a mentally ill individual, case closed. The fact that the world as a whole has no reliable way at least generally speaking of dealing with the psychological, let alone the occult at its fullest or most potent undoubtedly plays a role. People that have serious mental disorders to the point where they are placed in a straight jacket etc, people that have murdered others with no rational explanation and so on and so forth, some of them are legitimately dealing with negative spiritual forces. But of course, for reasons explained, they are literally and figuratively speaking in the simplest sense of the word for the sake of convenience and whatnot labeled “mentally unstable / mentally ill” and that’s all it is to it. The person themselves, and someone that can actually see past the material and looks at the situation will see it for what it is, regardless of degree or extent.

Why science denies- and will always deny the occult
