Logic over emotion; why feelings are so hard to overcome

Standard

It’s no secret that the average person does not have the mental capacity to overcome negative feelings and emotions, thoughts and so on – when people are presented with a mentally demanding situation or an emotionally draining one or similar, they fold. And by fold I obviously mean that they can’t stand the heat so to speak, and cannot withstand the intensity / pressure that such a situation or event brings about itself or brings with itself. As a result, they become traumatized or collapse mentally and are scarred for life.

So one might wonder, why is it that mentality and emotions are so difficult to deal with? Because most people in the world lack the intellectual capacity as well as the grit to be able to assess a situation logically all the while withstanding the aforementioned pressure. People in general are slaves to their emotions and feelings, not the other way around. Only people that are exceptional are capable of doing so. One might compare it to being a soldier on the battlefield and then having only 10 seconds to dismantle / do away with a hand grenade that will go off afterwards. What will most people do? Just as you imagine, they will start to panic they will try to flee and they will do all kinds of illogical things such as cover their faces which is obviously not going to help. The point is that a logically thinking person that has the strength to set aside all the negative emotions that come with such a high tense situation, will look for a constructive solution within that narrow time slot- for example disposing of the grenade in any way one can, or blunting its impact with any tool or similar. But instead, most will go “oh shit oh shit oh shit, I’m going to die I’m going to die” & so on..

Let it be noted that no one should particularly think little of themselves when it comes to this subject; it is incredibly hard, to not give in to feelings and emotions based on their sheer intensity. Dare I say, it is like actively trying to control your natural impulses and/or reflexes. Try for example to actively not blink when something is in your eye or not to cough if you by accident swallowed something the wrong way while eating or drinking..

Hence the saying:

Cool heads prevail.
