The merit of Shapeshifting

Standard

Most people are at a basic level familiar with shapeshifting, which is (loosely put) the ability to transform from human to animal. Most people would dismiss this as mere fantasy or myth, but still wonder in the recesses of their minds (especially fans of the supernatural or cryptids etc.) if the folk tales from old and related have any validity to it.

The answer is yes and no; shapeshifting is possible, but not in a material manner- something like that would take such tremendous lengths that it is impractical to say the least. What is doable, is that the person through rituals and whatnot is capable of temporarily having the attributes of an animal to their benefit. Examples hereof are Native American tribes from the past etc. that invoked the beneficial properties e.g. speed, strength, agility and so on from an animal & became periodically possessed by such energies, thereby accomplishing their goal. Spectators looking on that, more often than not, were intoxicated (as was at least commonplace) would be in a haze and therefore see the energy surrounding the person, rather than the person themselves. See the connection? And that’s a plausible explanation for how the (tall) tale of shapeshifting came about. Other explanations are the animalistic personification of mental illness (e.g. rabies in people), warriors going to war in a tribesman-like manner wearing animal skins & therefore being seen as “devil animals attacking us!”…It just goes on. Lycanthropy is another one.
